Facilities

The physical environment is such an important part of our curriculum; it can be considered a “third teacher”. Considerable thought and planning goes into the selection and arrangement of equipment and materials that make up the indoor, as well as, outdoor environment of our Center.

Classrooms

The Center is divided into five rooms: Red Class (ages 6 weeks - 9 months), Orange Class (ages 10 - 17 months), Yellow Class (ages 18 - 24 months), Green Class (2 - 3 years), and Blue Class (3 - 5 years). Each room features materials and equipment that are age appropriate for the developmental level of the children in that room. The outside play area is divided into two yards: one appropriate for infants and toddlers, and one geared toward play for the older children.

Infant Room (Red Class)

The Infant Room accepts children starting at 6 weeks to 9 months. There are two full-time teachers with the infants. Work study students and student assistants aid the teachers as their schedules permit. The infants have two areas of the room to explore. An active play area is available with a tunnel for crawlers and an exersaucer for the younger infants. In this area, many toys are accessible that lend to “noisy” play such as musical toys, rattles that make different sounds, blocks, and balls. A “cozy” area is set-up in another area of the room. Toys that are accessible in this area are conducive to “quiet” play such as books, puzzles, dolls, and soft toys.

Toddler One Room (Orange Class)

The Toddler One Room accepts children from 10 - 17 months of age. There are two full-time teachers with the toddlers. Work study students and student assistants aid the teachers as their schedules permit. The toddlers have a combination of indoor and outside playtime as the weather permits The Toddler Ones have many areas of the room to explore. The carpeted area of the room holds a book/cozy area, block center, kitchen, and fine motor area. The children have numerous toys to choose from including blocks, cars and trucks, push toys, pop-up toys, shape sorters, soft dolls, books, play food and dishes, etc. The toddlers participate in art activities daily. The children eat meals and snacks in the classroom at tables and chairs that are low to the ground and appropriate for their height.

Toddler Two Room (Yellow Class)

The Toddler Two Room accepts children at 18 - 24 months of age. There are two full-time teachers with the toddlers. The toddlers have a combination of indoor and outside playtime as the weather permits. The teachers interact with the children throughout the day by singing and talking. They aid their language development by modeling appropriate language and reading to the children. They help foster good social skills by discussing feelings and encouraging “gentle hands”. The toddlers are given the independence they need to explore their newly expanding world, but at the same time they are given the warmth and attention that is so important in their early years. The toddlers participate in art activities daily.

Two Year Old Room (Green Class)

The Two Year Old Room accepts children from 2 - 3 years of age. There are two full-time teachers with the two year olds. Work study students and student assistants aid the teachers as their schedules permit. The two year olds have a combination of indoor and outside playtime as the weather permits. The teachers interact with the children daily, both individually while the children are outside, or playing in centers, or performing daily routines such as meals and toileting as well as during small and large group activities. Much care and attention is provided to each child as they progress through this exciting stage of development when they are asserting their independence. The teachers provide the two year olds with clear, fair limits and guide them to make the right choices in a consistent manner. Children are encouraged to use their words instead of their hands and a great deal of importance is placed on the development of social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and being respectful of other’s feelings. During their daily group time, they read books and sing songs relating to the weekly theme of the week.

Preschool Room (Blue Class)

The Preschool class accepts children from 3 - 5 years of age. There are two full-time teachers with the preschoolers. Work study students and student assistants aid the teachers as their schedules permit. The teachers interact with the children throughout the day on an individual basis as well as during small and large group activities. The children are encouraged to use their words instead of their hands and accept responsibility for their actions. The teachers provide clear, concise rules and the children are aware of the consequences of their behavior. Positive reinforcement is used and children are praised when making good choices. There is a great deal of discussion throughout the day about respecting each other’s feelings. The preschoolers are given the independence to solve conflicts on their own in a safe environment where support and guidance is available when needed.
