Behavioral Intervention Team

The purpose of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is to evaluate and address student behavior that may be disruptive and/or concerning, and to coordinate University resources to promote a safe and healthy campus community.


BIT consists of a multi-disciplinary group of Loyola University New Orleans professionals with a mission to meet regularly to:

 

  • Provide a structured and proactive method to address student behavioral concerns that impact the university community. 
  • Manage each case individually.
  • Determine intervention strategies with students or groups of students that demonstrate patterns, trends and/or disturbances in behaviors.
  • Initiate intervention(s) to respond to situations.
  • Coordinate resources and follow-up to ensure timely and comprehensive response and care.
  • Balance the needs of the student(s) and the campus community.

BIT members work in different areas throughout the University and may work directly with affected individuals as well as others in the affected community to develop an appropriate response and provide recommendations for resolution of the concern. Members of the team include representatives from:

BIT addresses concerns, such as:

  • Academic Difficulty
  • Alcohol or Drug Abuse
  • Changed Mood/Appearance
  • Disordered Eating
  • Excessive Absence from Class
  • Family Emergency
  • Family Illness
  • Financial Aid Concern
  • Grief and/or Loss           
  • Injury/Illness – Hospital

  • Missing Student
  • Personal Wellness
  • Relationship Concern   
  • Retention Concern
  • Roommate        
  • Self-injurious behavior (e.g. cutting without suicide intent)

If you know of a student who is experiencing any of the above signs or stressors, we encourage you to submit a report through the online reporting system. This form is only monitored during regular business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30am - 4:45pm) and may not be immediately reviewed. Contact University Police (504-865-3434) IMMEDIATELY if there is risk to self or others.

As a part of this process, we work very hard to maintain confidentiality for students so they trust the work we’re doing. As a result, if you submit a report, we don’t generally report back or communicate with you about the details of how we’ll be working with individual students.
